How Long is the Validity Period of Malaysia Type Approval Certificate

Manufacturers need to be aware of the validity period of Malaysia type approval certificates. This will determine how long telecommunications and wireless devices can be legally marketed and used in this country.

Once a SIRIM certificate has been issued, it does not mean that issues related to the marketing and use of the device have been resolved. You need to pay attention to the validity period of Malaysia type approval.

In this case, the criteria are set by SIRIM or the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia. This institution regulates the approval process for telecommunications devices entering and circulating in the country.

Understanding the validity period of Malaysia type approval allows you to know about certificate renewals. That way, your devices will always be legal to market and use in the country.

Certificate Issuance Process

Before learning about the validity period of Malaysia type approval certificates, you need to know how these certificates are issued. The issuance of SIRIM certificates involves a lengthy process.

This process includes document compliance, document requirement testing (test reports), and certification submission.

Document requirements

The following is a list of documents required for SIRIM certification applications:

  1. Equipment Information & Specification Tab
  2. Principal & Manufacturer Tab
  3. Supporting Document Attachments, which are based on the Application Category. Example:
    • color brochures
    • user manual
    • equipment specification
    • technical manual
    • test report
  4. Pre-Quotation
  5. Trademark registration evidence
  6. Brand Declaration Tab
  7. Declaration (Submit) Tab

Document submission

All documents must be submitted through the Online Certification System for Communication and Multimedia Equipment (e-ComM). Applicants must also submit laboratory registration, test report registration, trademark/brand statements, and compliance approval submissions.

  • Laboratory registration: The process of registering testing facilities that issue test reports. This applies to both facilities that are already registered and those that have never been registered in the system.
  • Test report registration: The process of uploading all required test results.
  • Trademark/brand statement: The process of recognition by the applicant of the brand submitted for Malaysian type approval.

Document evaluation

All document requirements for Malaysian type approval will be submitted through e-ComM. SIRIM will schedule the evaluation on a predetermined date. Once the evaluation is complete, SIRIM will respond as to whether the certification application is approved or rejected.

If the application passes the evaluation stage, it will proceed to the issuance of the Malaysia type approval certificate. However, if the application does not pass the evaluation, the missing documents must be completed and then re-evaluated by SIRIM.

Certificate issuance

When a Malaysia type approval certificate is issued, it means that your product has officially obtained permission to be marketed and used in Malaysia. The date of issuance of the certificate becomes the date of the validity period of Malaysia type approval.

The lead time for Malaysia type approval varies for document testing and local testing. Local testing takes approximately two weeks after all required documents have been received. Meanwhile, local testing has a waiting period of approximately four to six weeks from the receipt of documents and samples.

Labeling

The labeling requirements for SIRIM Malaysia certification require the affixing of a Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) label. This label consists of three components: a triangle with the letters MCMC and the identification number of the certified manufacturer underneath.

The certification mark or label must not be placed arbitrarily on communication equipment. This label can be affixed to the surface of the device or used with electronic labeling (e-labeling) methods.

Validity Period of Malaysia Type Approval Certificate

Understanding the validity period of Malaysia type approval is closely related to the regulations that govern it. These regulations are set out in eTAC/DOC/01-1.1 section 12.2.4.

SIRIM certificates are valid for one to five years, depending on the validity period chosen by the applicant. Applicants for Malaysian type approval are allowed to choose the validity period of their certificate. The maximum validity period of a SIRIM certificate is five years.

After the validity period expires, the certificate can be renewed using the documents used in the initial application. This is provided that there are no changes to the product specifications. However, if there are changes, it is necessary to resubmit the documents and follow the recertification process from the beginning.

This renewal is regulated by SIRIM to ensure that even product models remain compliant with the latest SIRIM Standards and Technical Specifications, which may be updated periodically to keep pace with technological developments and spectrum management requirements.

Renewal can be processed one month before the expiry date. The new date starts from the expiry date.
