Therefore, it is important to understand the cost to apply for Mexico type approval from the outset.

The certification process in Mexico differs between NOM and CRT. All fee requirements are determined by the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT). This authority is an agency under the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).

Your budget will be better planned when you know the cost to apply for Mexico type approval. Knowing this from the start will make it easier for you to estimate expenses and allocate funds effectively and accurately.

Types of Mexico Type Approval

As we know, Mexico type approval is divided into two categories: Normas Oficiales Mexicanas (NOM) and Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT). Both have different costs when applying for certification.

Before you know the cost to apply for Mexico type approval, you need to understand the differences in the certification processes.

1. NOM

NOM is a certification that must be obtained for all telecommunications products, whether or not they have Radio Frequency (RF) capabilities. This certification is not limited to telecommunications products alone, but its scope is limited to those related to telecommunications products.

NOM is not issued by a government authority but by an accredited certification body (CB). Each CB will naturally have different fees for the certification application process.

2. CRT

CRT is a certification required for telecommunications devices with RF features. This certification is conducted after the NOM certification has been issued.

Thus, telecommunications devices with RF features will have two certifications: NOM and CRT. Meanwhile, telecommunications devices without RF features require only NOM certification.

Previously, CRT was known as the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT). It was officially adopted on October 21, 2025.

Regulation in Mexico

The cost to apply for Mexico type approval is not unreasonable. They are regulated by the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) dated July 7, 2022, regarding official fees for certification applications.

This document provides information on all fees for the types of services provided by the CRT (formerly IFT). These fees include applications for Type A/B/C, reissuance, and technical reviews/validations to maintain the certificate’s validity.

Cost to Apply for Mexico Type Approval

The cost to apply for Mexico type approval varies between NOM and CRT. We cannot provide exact information regarding NOM fees, as each CB will have different rates. Generally, the cost ranges around $4,000.

However, what we can provide are the official fees for CRT as listed in the official DOF document dated 07/07/2022. You may also view them on the official website www.ift.org.mx.

As of the publication of this article, there is no official website or official regulations issued by CRT. These fees were updated by IFT in 2022. If there are any changes after that, we will try to update them.

Service Types

Fee (MXN)

Type A – Application review & certificate issuance (including product changes / Type A certificate extensions)

MXN 812.45

Type B – Application review & certificate issuance

MXN 2,827.87

Type C – Application review & certificate issuance

MXN 3,193.92

Reissuance of Type A / B / C certificates

MXN 657.71

Technical validation review to maintain the indefinite validity of Type B & C certificates

MXN 614.48

The costs listed above do not include other expenses such as laboratory testing and local representative/importer services (if required).

For telecommunications products with RF features, the costs will be higher. This is because the process involves applying for two certificates: NOM and CRT. Consequently, two sets of fees must be paid.

Product Marketing After Certificate Issuance

The NOM and CRT certificates will be issued once all document submissions, local testing, and payments are completed. However, a certified product cannot be marketed immediately. Many countries generally enforce labeling requirements.

Similarly, in Mexico, mandatory labeling must be done after the certificates are issued, whether for NOM or CRT certification. For more detailed requirements, you can refer to our previous article on label requirements for Mexico type approval.

That’s everything you need to know about the cost to apply for Mexico type approval. Knowing this from the start can help you plan your certification budget more effectively.

Moreover, applying for certification for telecommunications products in Mexico is not exactly cheap. This is because there are two types of certification that must be applied for.

Issues related to the cost to apply for Mexico type approval can cause delays in marketing your product.
