Manufacturers, importers, and distributors are naturally eager to market their telecommunications products there. However, before entering the market, these products require RF certification in Saudi Arabia. This certification is mandatory for all telecommunications products as a mark of safety and compliance with applicable regulations.
RF certification in Saudi Arabia emphasizes the documents that must be prepared and submitted through a single-window portal. By thoroughly understanding the certification process, marketing telecommunications products in this country becomes much easier.
What is RF Certification in Saudi Arabia?
RF certification in Saudi Arabia is administered by the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST). This authority is responsible for overseeing telecommunications, space, technology, digital platforms, and radio frequency allocation.
A MIC certificate serves as proof that your device is legally compliant. This means that Saudi Arabia’s technical, safety, and compatibility standards have been met.
As a result, the device will not pose any risks and will not interfere with the operation of other devices when used simultaneously. Consequently, users can use it safely.
Product Requiring Certification
Many people assume that RF certification is only required for smartphones and routers. In fact, any product with radio frequency capabilities requires CST certification.
This includes smart home devices, automotive equipment, wearables, medical devices, audio-video equipment, and even mining and environmental monitoring equipment. In short, if a device connects wirelessly, it must be certified under CST.
Who Can Apply for Certification?
Saudi Arabia shares similarities with many countries regarding applicant requirements. Only registered local companies may submit applications. These may include brand representatives, importers, or distributors.
Local companies designated as applicants will automatically become the certificate holders. Therefore, foreign companies must appoint a local company to act as their representative when submitting an application.
We recommend that you partner with an importer who is already registered and has an account on Saudi Arabia’s official compliance platform, Saber. This system will be used for the entire certification application process from start to finish.
MIC Certification Process
RF certification in Saudi Arabia has been streamlined through a document-based process submitted via a single platform. CST does not require any local testing.
Please note that applicants must already have test results for Radio Frequency (RF), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), and Electrical Safety issued by an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory in accordance with CE standards.
If you do not yet have these test reports, the Narmadi Company team will assist you in finding a suitable laboratory to conduct the testing. If this is required, you will also need to submit samples for testing. The number and type of samples will depend on the type of testing and the device’s RF specifications.
Document requirements
In addition to the test reports, you will need several other supporting documents for the certification application. The following documents are required:
- CST application form
- RF, EMC, and safety test reports
- Declaration of Conformity
- Internal and external product photos
- Risk analysis
- RoHS declaration
- Product data sheet
- User manual
- Saber login credentials
Submit document and evaluation
All required documents will be submitted via the Saber platform. Our team will then monitor the process through that platform.
Once evaluated, a certificate will be issued immediately for documents that pass the review. However, if a document fails the review due to missing information, it must be corrected and resubmitted via the Saber platform.
Lead Time and Certificate Validity
With a single-platform system, RF certification in Saudi Arabia is considered relatively fast compared with other Middle Eastern countries. The entire process, from start to certificate issuance, takes approximately two to four weeks.
As for the validity period, the CST certificate may be a source of frustration for many manufacturers. Saudi Arabia has the shortest validity period of any country.
This is because the certificate is valid for only one year. Therefore, renewal must be done annually and cannot be missed.
Once the expiration date has passed, the device is deemed illegal. You will also need to restart the certification process.
Labeling Requirements
Since certificates must be renewed annually, Saudi Arabia has waived the labeling requirement for devices that have already been certified. If a labeling requirement were in place, manufacturers might find it even more difficult, as they would also have to update the labels every year.
There is indeed no specific CST mark or certification number on the box. However, the product’s original manufacturer’s label is still required. This label typically includes the type of equipment, brand, model, country of origin, and applicable compliance logos such as CE or FCC.
